Peace is defined in the Oxford dictionary as “the freedom from disturbance.”
Freedom is defined as “the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved,” and disturbance means “the disruption of healthy functioning.”
So peace means “the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved from the disruption of healthy functioning.” This is a negative definition, so let’s look at what this would mean positively.
I think a great definition of peace would be “the mental and emotional state of being free from unhealthy functioning.”
That sounds pretty nice, right? I want to be at peace, don’t you? Functioning healthily while feeling free from disruption or disturbance sounds nice. But how do we get there?
In John 16:33, it says, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
So, we can find peace in Jesus Christ, the salvation He brings, the kind of life we can model after Him, and the sorts of things He preached to us.
Some more verses about finding our peace in God and Christ are as follows:
Isaiah 26:3—"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you."
Philippians 4:6-7 - “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Psalm 4:8—"In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."
This life is difficult, and at many times we do not experience peace. We are not free from disturbance or disruption but are constantly going back and forth, being busy, running errands, completing tasks, and not getting enough sleep.
In God, though, we can find peace from the trials and tribulations of this life.
