In peace I will sleep

Life is not always very relaxing. We often find ourselves just trying to stay afloat in the overwhelming waves of life. Frankly, we’re trying just to make it to the end of the day!

David was a man who faced a lot of highs and a lot of lows. From killing Goliath, to being chased by Saul, to becoming king, and then later committing adultery with Bathsheba, David’s life was not the epitome of an easy-going life.

Despite all of this, we find David proclaiming in Psalm 4:8 that “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety” (emphasis added).

David recognized that the reason he could sleep peacefully was not because he had his life altogether, but it was because he served a God who is by nature good as well as sovereign over all things

Psalm 25:8a - “Good and upright is the Lord”

Colossians 1:16 - “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

There will be some nights where you simply do not feel any peace, any joy, anything that is comprehendible. In those moments, our natural instinct is to feel hopeless, or maybe you are one of those people that tries to figure everything out, probably to no avail.

However, to find true peace we must look to someone much bigger than ourselves, the very one “who made heaven and earth”!

Psalm 121:1-2 - “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

Instead of looking to ourselves to “fix” all of our troubles, let’s instead be like David and rest in the all-knowing savior who formed us in our mother’s womb!

Psalm 139:13-14 - “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
