The Redeemer | Anchored in Hope Devotional

I know my Redeemer lives!

That is the beginning of a song written by Samuel Medley, and oh what a truth it is!

But what even is a redeemer?

“A redeemer is someone entrusted with securing one’s release from oppression, harm, evil, enslavement, or some other binding obligation.” (gotquestions.org)

We see a picture of a redeemer in the book of Ruth.

Boaz redeemers Ruth in chapter 4, and then He takes her to be his wife where they have a son named Obed, the Father of Jesse, the Father of David.

However, what is so cool is that this kinsman redeemer, Boaz, became a part of the lineage of the ultimate Redeemer, Jesus Christ!

The redemption Jesus offers is so glorious and life changing that the blind hymn writer Fanny Crosby wrote these lyrics:

Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!

Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb!

redeemed through His infinite mercy—

His child, and forever, I am.

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth in him.” - Ephesians 1:7-10 (ESV)

“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.” - Colossians 1:13 (NIV)

Jesus through His sacrifice on the cross redeems all of those who believe and repent of their sin (change of mind leading to a change of direction). He is the redeemer that breaks the shackles of sin, shame, and severe punishment, and He sets the captive free!

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” - 1 John 1:9

“Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” - Romans 10:9

To end this devotional, let us rest in the reality of this truth from a contemporary hymn (written by Nathen Stiff and Sovereign Grace Worship) on our Redeemer:

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer

Gracious Savior of my ruined life

My guilt and cross laid on Your shoulders

In my place You suffered bled and died

You rose, the grave and death are conquered

You broke my bonds of sin and shame

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer

May all my days bring glory to Your Name
